Would you prefer Harvest Gold or Avocado Green?
At one time these colors were the rage of a generation that wanted their home décor to be as earthy as possible. Thank goodness that phase is over.
One has to understand before this period residential kitchen appliances color choices were white or from the mid-century modern palate; pink is a color that comes to mind. So any color brought into the kitchen was welcomed. Today’s generation gags when they see homes with these colored appliances. Their comments usually are “reminds me what my grandmother had in her kitchen.” They would never purchase a home decked out in the above-stated colors. So why bring this topic up to my audience?
Smart Home Decor sells.
If you have any plans in the future to sell your home, make sure the style and decorating are of the timeless variety. If your design is so specific to your senses and lifestyle plan on forking out some dinero before the “for sale” sign gets pounded into the yard. I am not against having your home in the style you enjoy, after all, it is your home, I am just saying be forewarned.
As mundane as neutral colors are buyers appreciate walking into a home with these colors. Marble always makes the rounds in home design. Yes, there are some maintenance issues; however, quality marble seems to be a show stopper. There is not a prettier natural stone.
Wood floors are always welcomed and stand the test of time. As is quality wood cabinetry that is not dark. Buyers will not reject white cabinets as they are free to accessorize with their color preferences. Light colors give a dwelling an airy feel. Here in the Sacramento Valley buyers do not like dark homes; they want the light from the sunshine. And get rid of that colored accent wall.
Carpet seems to be an issue for many buyers. Colored carpets tend to be out of favor. As is carpets that show their age. Hard surfaces are preferable with the possible exception of bedrooms. Hard surfaces allow for better control of allergens which we all know is a nuisance to many in the area.
Bold had better dazzle.
If you decide not to change the décor and keep the bold, it had better dazzle. The decor needs to blow the socks off of potential buyers. Something they will talk about in a kind way long after the first viewing. Off the top of my head, I am not able to recall something in that realm. How about you, any thoughts? I would appreciate hearing them.
If your audience of buyers is museums, then don’t do a thing to change the appeal.
So the bottom line is before you place your home on the market prepare your home for mass appeal. Doing so will maximize your potential sales price. I am not asking you to remodel your home, only to understand the reasons if the home you are selling is not attracting any offers.
